[7] Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap. [8] For he who sows to his flesh will of the flesh reap corruption, but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life. [9] And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart. [10] Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.
I seem to come back to this scripture a lot, and maybe because I need to be reminded of what it says. So let’s get right to it. Paul wants to be clear that there is no way to fool GOD. However, we can and tend to fool ourselves. So the very first statement that he says in the scripture this morning is,” Do not be deceived.” This to me says a lot. It means we can lie to ourselves. But like u said a minute ago, you can’t lie to GOD. HE tends to put the ball back in our court, and honestly, Paul is not pulling any punches by telling us that. The word mocked means to mimic or pretend. So I believe what is being said is that GOD sees through our fake, halfhearted attempts to pretend to be something we are not. HE wants real committed followers. Followers that are not trying to do this thing halfway. That’s why HE puts it back on us by telling Paul to make sure we know that HE will not be mocked. Whatever we put out there is what we will get back. I liken this to a farmer who plants a field. If he plants wheat, he knows he will not harvest bananas. Paul moves on in verse 8 to dive into the purpose of what he is writing. Likening our lives to a harvest and telling us if we sow or feed our flesh, we will reap corruption, but if we sow to our spirit man, we will reap eternal life. Here is the part that can get a little difficult. Verse 9 tells us not to get tired of well doing. What I believe Paul is saying is some will receive what you are sowing, and some won’t. Don’t let the ones who won’t receive it detour you from moving to the next one who will receive it. Verse 10 is, in my opinion, confirmation of that last statement. Treat everyone with love and respect. Especially those in your church family.
I don’t know about you, but I want my heart to be in the right position with GOD. I don’t want to be the guy who puts on a smile at church, but my home life is falling apart. I am not a part-time Christian. Having a real and tangible relationship with the Almighty GOD is my true heart’s cry. I went to a discipleship program several years ago that introduced me to what it honestly looks like to walk with GOD. Digging into HIS word and looking for HIS character. Trying to find out what HE wanted from me. What I want you to know is that GOD is exactly who HE presents HIMSELF to be. There is nothing fake about HIM, and here is how I found that out. By reading the bible, you find out who GOD is and the promises HE has made to you. When you start learning to apply the principles that are taught in the Bible, you see that GOD does what HE says. The principle of reaping and sowing. If you do what your sinful nature wants, you reap what sin brings. But, if you sow to the spiritual side of your life, you reap spiritual blessings. So let me put it out there like this. There are always 2 ways to handle any situation you come to. You can react, or you can act. When you react it’s like that knee-jerk thing it’s automatic and requires no thought until after you are done and then most of the time requires some kind of apology because you sowed to the flesh and said what you wanted rather than sowing to that spirit and saying what was needed. If you wait, GOD will give you the right words to say. Sowing to your flesh can damage everything connected to it. The reason I am speaking about this is that I don’t want to be that guy. The one who just does and doesn’t think about the repercussions. My prayer for the last 8 or 10 years is that my relationship with the LORD would be real. I want to act not react. Taking time to speak what is needed with as little damage to others as possible.
Father, we know that you have given us the instructions to a life that is glorious and beautiful. Help us to take the time that is needed to sow to the spiritual side of our lives. We want to walk in step with you. Help us to do so. It’s in the mighty name of Jesus I pray amen.
